Chronograph Testing and Procedures

Purpose:
TASO-endorsed events shall commit to and provide the following to ensure the safety of all participants by using a staff and player-standard method to quickly and accurately evaluate replicas.

Event/promoter shall have available and/or provide:
  • Minimum of 1 chronograph station per every 60 players + 1 chrono available for Marshall
  • 1 bag of 0.25g BBs (AE recommended)
  • Method to load AEG mags (recommend TM-style pistol or M16 mag click loader)
  • 1 staff member to load mags/check hopup per every 60 players (referred to as Staff member #1 below)
  • 1 staff member for every 1 chronograph station (referred to as Staff member #2 below)
  • 1 staff member to apply zipties (referred to as Staff member #3 below)
  • Muzzle energy cheatsheet for each chrono station (available for download on TASO site)
  • Roster of attending players for each chrono station
  • Pen
  • Bag of zip-ties (visible color determined by event staff)
  • Designated Chrono Marshall with dedicated chrono for his use (this person should be readily available during chrono times)

AEG (regular and support) and Pistol (if applicable) Procedure for chrono staff:
  1. Player will approach chrono station with each replica they could use during event. This includes backups.
  2. Staff member #1 is responsible for ensuring player's hopup is turned off and weapon is clear.
  3. Staff member #1 uses loader to put several event-provided 0.25g BBs into feed tube of player's mag.
  4. Player approaches chrono and identifies name to Staff member #2.
  5. Staff member #2 records name and guns. (optional depending on event organizer decision)
  6. Player shoots 3 recordable shots over chrono. Staff member #2 records readings for each replica.
  7. Depending on readings, Staff member #3 will:
    • Replica complies with TASO limits, zip-tie is applied on replica in a place that does not allow for zip-tie to be removed and moved to another replica.
    • If replica does not comply, it cannot be used during event until it passes chrono check. Player is instructed to go speak to Chrono Marshall about resolution. Player is to exit line immediately to avoid delays out of courtesy to other players in line. Chrono Marshall will check replica again using his chrono and then decide on a resolution to assist player. Resolutions can range from not allowing the replica's use, downgrading the replica, assisting in options to use a different passing replica, etc, and are at the discretion of Chrono Marshall.
  8. Staff reserves right to randomly spot-check replicas throughout the event at their own discretion.
  9. Velocity reducers are not permitted.

Sniper rifle replica Procedure for chrono staff:
  1. Player will approach chrono station with each replica they could use during event. This includes backups. Player will also bring bag of BB weight they intend to use during the event.
  2. Staff member #1 is responsible for ensuring player's hopup is turned off (if adjustable) and weapon is clear.
  3. Staff member verifies BB weight from player-provided bag and uses loader to put several player-provided BBs into player's mag.
  4. Player approaches chrono and identifies name to Staff member #2.
  5. Staff member #2 records name, BB weight, and replica.
  6. Player shoots 3 recordable shots over chrono. Staff member #2 records readings for each replica.
  7. Depending on readings:
    • Replica complies with TASO/event limits, zip-tie is applied on replica.
    • Replica does not comply, it cannot be used during event until it passes chrono check. Player is instructed to go speak to Chrono Marshall about resolution. Player is to exit line immediately to avoid delays out of courtesy to other players in line. Chrono Marshall will check replica again using his chrono and then decide on a resolution to assist player. Resolutions can range from not allowing the replica, downgrading the replica, assisting in options to use a different passing replica, etc, and are at the discretion of Chrono Marshall.
  8. Staff reserves right to randomly spot-check replicas throughout the event at their own discretion.
  9. Velocity reducers are not permitted.

Limits in practice per TASO ROE:
  1. Regular AEGs, due to the spring strength tolerance, spring brand, manufacturing tolerances, and other part variables, are allowed a buffer zone not permitted in the support weapon and sniper rifle categories. Regular AEGs, per TASO rules, are limited to M120-equivalent spring levels (1.48J) for outdoor/woodlands events. A buffer will allow that energy to go up to 1.63J (375fps/.25g) as the absolute hard limit cutoff. Users need to realize that is NOT a goal; it is an absolute cutoff point.
  2. Support weapon and sniper rifle replicas have hard limits of 450fps/.2g (1.87J) and 550fps/.2g (2.8J), meaning no replica can cross that limit. The replica must be below those limits with absolutely no exceptions.
  3. There are no buffer zones or exceptions for CQB and pistol muzzle energies; both are hard limits.
